"Grande femme II" is one of four female figures commissioned from Giacometti by Chase Manhattan Bank in New York.

Never completed, the original project consisted of three large sculptures that would be able to command attention when surrounded by skyscrapers: a woman standing, a man walking, and a head on a pedestal. "Grande Femme II" can be perceived as a goddess, a source of all life, or more abstractly, as the Other. Its large size was not intended to create a monumental statue but to ensure it commanded authority.
