Grey is one of the colours that is most frequently explored by Gerhard Richter.

Firstly in his paintings inspired by black and white photographs, then, from 1966, in his grid-like compositions in which he juxtaposes different hues. In 1973 Richter began to use textural effects to subtly alter large monochrome canvases in which grey, the sum of all colours, is a "neutral" expression, without intent or plan, which the artist used as a distancing effect at the time.
