The title "Gudrun" (1987) refers to Gudrun Ensslin, a founding member of the Red Army Faction, establishing a direct link with the well-known series "October 18, 1977", which Richter painted in 1988.

In the latter, the artist worked in a photorealistic style to evoke the tragic death of four members of the terrorist group. The alternation or even concomitance of abstract and figurative series is a constant in Richter’s work.
