PIERRE BONNARD, Summer, 1917
Oil on canvas
Radiating the sunlight from the south of France, this contemporary Arcadia has been reconstituted from visual impressions. The masses of bright, juxtaposed colours create a landscape with no real depth, and the realistic scene in the foreground is confronted with the idyllic vision of the glowing nymphs in the center. Two temporal spaces coexist, that of past and present. Though it was painted during the First World War, tranquility radiates from this painting.
Fontenay-aux-Roses 3 October 1867 – Le Cannet 23 January 1947
