quote

. . . Trembling with anxiety – I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature

Edvard Munch quote

EDVARD MUNCH, THE SCREAM  1893 ? 1910?,

Oil and tempera on cardboard

While this oppressive vision had its source in the artist’s actual experience watching a sunset, The Scream has become an icon of a universal metaphysical anguish. The contrast between the yellow sky streaked with ‘blood red’ bands and the cold tonality of the fjord and the figures create a nightmarish atmosphere. Emblematic of a radically new esthetic centered on moving beyond naturalism, The Scream marked a complete disruption in the history of modern art.
