FERNAND LÉGER – THREE WOMEN (LE GRAND DEJEUNER), 1921-1922

The smooth, metallic roundness of these three powerful, stylized odalisques calls to mind the machine cylinders which had so fascinated Léger since 1914. The carefully arranged composition is structured according to the radical principle of contrast that structures all of Léger’s work: chromatic contrast between black and white and the primary colours, between curves and right angles, and between the commonplace contemporary interior and the timeless figures shown in it.

Life:

Argentan 4 February 1881 – Gif-sur-Yvette 17 August 1955.
