Since it opened, the Fondation has made it sure to welcome young visitors with special events and workshops suited for them. These activities allow the younger public to discover the building, commissioned art works and exhibitions through a recreational, sensitive approach tailored to families and schools. So it was only natural that the Fondation joins the big birthday party of Le Petit Nicolas (“Little Nicholas”), the most famous schoolboy of all!

On Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March 2019, the Fondation and IMAV éditions invite you to a family weekend to mark this key work in children’s literature and to pay homage to its two creators: René Goscinny and Jean-Jacques Sempé.

10.00 a.m.-6.00 p.m.

An exceptional exhibition of Sempé’s original drawings alongside texts by René Goscinny. Executed in India ink during the 1960s, these drawings have since become part of the collective imagination and reveal the extraordinary talent of one of the most famous duos in children's literature: Goscinny and Sempé.

2.00 p.m.-6.00 p.m.

A spectacular workshop conceived by Claire Faÿ and Les Éditions Animées will take place in the Auditorium at the Fondation. Children and their parents will be able to colour drawings of Le Petit Nicholas, which they will then see transformed into an animation using the BlinkBook app, and projected onto a large screen.

Created by two genius humourists, René Goscinny for the text and Jean-Jacques Sempé for the drawings, Le Petit Nicolas has become a classic of our literature. Goscinny’s humour and Sempé’s poetic images have made this character so universally appealing that he has won the hearts of every generation around the world.

Le Petit Nicolas’ first adventure in the form of a story written by Goscinny and illustrated by Sempé appeared on 29 March 1959 in the Easter edition of the Sud-Ouest Dimanche newspaper.

In total, 222 Petit Nicolas stories have been published. With 15 million copies sold for all titles, translated into 40 languages, Le Petit Nicolas is a truly international hero.
