The Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle returns to the Fondation Auditorium for a fifth season. This project, created and directed by Gautier Capuçon, is designed to promote six young and talented cellists from around the world and give them expert direction in perfecting their skills. With support from the orchestra of Le Conservatoire National de Musique et de Danse de Paris, each young cellist is assigned a movement from one of Joseph Haydn’s two concertos for cello and orchestra, to be practiced and performed under the guidance of Nicolas Chalvin and Gautier Capuçon as co-conductors.

As part of the Fondation’s commitment to promoting and disseminating every form of artistic creation, this public artist-in-residence project, harboured in a museum and unparalleled in the world, is a veritable musical laboratory. Through artistic and professional coaching sessions, the Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle gives students the chance to broaden and deepen their understanding of musical workmanship throughout the year and to better grasp all that a professional musical career entails. Guest speakers also take part in the Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle, helping students learn about various aspects of a musician’s life, such as personal career management, works schedules, life on tour, media relations, stress management, healthy lifestyle practices and even coping with physical issues.

 

To share the educational advantages with the broadest audience possible, the project is closely followed by medici.tv, which records and broadcasts (live, in some cases) the season’s master classes and concerts.

Direction

Gautier Capuçon

Gautier Capuçon is a true 21st century ambassador for the cello. Performing each season with many of the world’s foremost conductors and instrumentalists, he is also founder and leader of the Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle at the Fondation the Auditorium designed by Frank Gehry.

The 2018/19 season sees Capuçon premiere a new concerto for cello and piano (Dubugnon, Eros Athanatos) with the pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet – a piece written for the duo – with symphony orchestras of West Australia, Antwerp, WDR and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Elsewhere, he performs as soloist with, amongst others: the philharmonic orchestras of New York, Los Angeles, Munich and the Czech Republic; the symphony orchestras of Chicago, NHK and Sydney; Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Orchestre de Paris  As a chamber musician, he performs with Lisa Batiashvili and Jean-Yves Thibaudet on an extensive piano trio European tour, as well as appearing with recital partners Frank Braley, Gabriela Montero, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Yuja Wang in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Hall, Aix en Provence and the Musikverein.

 

Throughout his career, Capuçon has developed a number of long-standing relationships. Each season he is invited by many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the philharmonic orchestras of Berlin, Vienna, Los Angeles and New York, and the symphony orchestras of Chicago, San Francisco and London. He regularly works with conductors such as Lionel Bringuier, Semyon Bychkov, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Valery Gergiev, Andris Nelsons, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin; and collaborates with contemporary composers including Lera Auerbach, Karol Beffa, Esteban Benzecry, Nicola Campogrande, Qigang Chen, Jerome Ducros, Henry Dutilleux, Thierry Escaich, Philippe Manoury, Bruno Mantovani, Krzysztof Penderecki, Wolfgang Rihm, and Jörg Widmann.  As a chamber musician, he performs annually in the major halls and festivals with partners such as Nicholas Angelich, Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Lisa Batiashvili, Frank Braley, Renaud Capuçon, Jérome Ducros, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Menahem Pressler, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the Artemis and Ébène quartets.

 

Recording exclusively for Erato (Warner Classics), Capuçon has won multiple awards and holds an extensive discography. His latest album – Intuition - was released in 2018 and recorded with the Paris Chamber Orchestra/Douglas Boyd and Jérôme Ducros. Earlier recordings include concertos by Shostakovich (Mariinsky Orchestra/Valery Gergiev) and Saint-Saëns (Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France/Lionel Bringuier), the complete Beethoven Sonatas with Frank Braley, and Schubert’s String Quintet with the Ébène Quartet. Capuçon’s next album – a disk of Schumann works with Bernard Haitink, Martha Argerich and Renaud Capuçon - will be released in January 2019.  Elsewhere, he appears on screen and online in programmes such as The Artist Academy, Prodiges, and Now Hear This, and in 2013 Deutsche Grammophon released a DVD featuring Capuçon as soloist with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Gustavo Dudamel in a live performance of Haydn’s Cello Concerto No.1.

 

Born in Chambéry, Capuçon began playing the cello at the age of five with Augustin Lefèbvre. He studied in Paris with Philippe Muller and Annie Cochet-Zakine, and later with Heinrich Schiff in Vienna. He received several international prizes, including the First Great Prize of the André Navarra International Competition in Toulouse (France).

Nicolas Chalvin

“An exceptional sense of orchestral balance, “elegantly precise”, “a refined colourist” – just some of the glowing terms used to describe the direction of Nicolas Chalvin.


A fully rounded musician, he both cherishes and practices the three facets of a conductor’s role: operas, symphonies and chamber orchestras.

From opera to symphony
Nicolas Chalvin began his career at the Lausanne Opera, where he was inspired by Armin Jordan, who encouraged him to trade in the oboe for the baton. There, he led a wide range of repertoires – Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice, Messager’s Véronique, Offenbach’s Parisian Life, Pascal Dusapin’s Niobé, Philippe Boesmans’ Reigen and Verdi’s The Troubadour, as well as Carmen, Madame Butterfly and The Trojans, among others. “With opera, it’s the conductor who breathes life into the drama, and the conductor who draws together the various elements of the orchestra pit to create perfect harmony,” he enthuses. Before long, Chalvin was making frequent forays into the world of symphonies, performing as a guest with the Orchestre National de Lyon and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, as well as with orchestras in Innsbruck and Geneva. In 2009, he was appointed musical director of the Orchestre National des Pays de Savoie, which he soon brought to international prominence.

 

An eclectic and exacting conductor
A great admirer of the Viennese masters (Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms), Chalvin strives to recreate the tone and style of their phrasing and places a particular emphasis on orchestral balance. His preferred repertoire, however, extends much further. He enjoys the subtlety and transparency of French music, as well as its colour and bold harmonies. Yet his devotion to the great works of the classical repertoire has not prevented him from leading his musicians into less charted territory – this has resulted in the Orchestre National des Pays de Savoie recording rarer pieces by Reynaldo Hahn and Paul Le Flem. Contemporary music is also an area of particular interest for Chalvin.

 

Leading the orchestra, each step of the way
A firm believer in the rich value and limitless potential of the chamber orchestra as an ensemble, Nicolas Chalvin leads the Orchestre National des Pays de Savoie in a range of repertoires, from Baroque to contemporary, in programmes that have been warmly received by the public and critics alike. Not just an artist, a conductor is also a manager. As Chalvin himself explains: “The conductor’s role is a difficult yet fascinating one, requiring great interpersonal skills and a keen sense of awareness. More than anything, I like to draw the orchestra with me, each step of the way, so that, together, we can bring concerts to life with moments of magic.” In addition to a full season with the Orchestre National des Pays de Savoie, Chalvin will also direct Peer Gynt at the Opéra de Limoges in May 2017.

Jérémy Garbarg

Jérémy Garbarg is the embodiment of France’s new generation of cellists.  

 

He won Third Prize and the Audience Award at the International Johannes Brahms competition in Austria and the Viña del Mar competition in Chile. His playing style has been described as “profoundly moving and generous” and he now performs regularly in France and abroad. His media appearances include airtime on Medici.tv, Dakapp, France Musique, Le Violoncelle, La Lettre du Musicien, TSF Jazz, and many more outlets.

 

He has been a guest of the Centre de Musique de Chambre de Paris, the Seiji Ozawa International Academy and many festivals, including Prades-Casals, Palazzetto Bru Zane, Rencontres de Bélaye, Grands Crus of Bourgogne, Rencontres Franco-Américains and Ysaÿe’s Knokke.

 

His future plans include concerts and recordings with Vincent Mussat, with whom he forms the Duo Morgen, as well as live performances with the Quatuor Lumost, François Salque, Michel Lethiec and others.

 

He plays a Frank Ravatin cello using a François Peccatte bow and is supported by the Safran Foundation.

 

 

Luca Giovannini

Luca Giovannini, born in Rovigo on May 24th 2000, studies with Professor Luca Simoncini.  

He is Graduate with 10 Lode and Mention in 2017. In 2011, he  won over 30 first prizes  in several national and international contests such as, Grand Prize London, Grand Prize SalzburgRising Stars Berlin, “Crescendo” in  Florence, Città di Riccione, Salieri in Legnago, Città di Forlì, Città di Piove di Sacco, città di Giussano, T.I.M. Paris, Ibla Gran Prize Ragusa, Milan ”Maura Giorgetti” Philarmonic of Teatro Alla Scala, Antonio Janigro in Kroazia, “A. Zinetti” Sanguinetto (VR) Castel San Giovanni, International Music, he got the third prize  Alice & Eleonora Schoenfeld String Competition Harbin (China 2016) and first prizes competition Castrocaro Terme, first prize International Johannes Brahms Competition Pörtschah Wettbewerb Österreich (2018).

 

He  performed  in various prestige theatres as Museo Casa Barezzi in Busseto,  theatre Philharmonie in Berlin,  Mozarteum in Salzburg, Opera House Harbin (China), Salone dei Cinquecento in Florence, Villa Houck in Switzerland, Sala Maffeiana in Verona, the church “Rotonda” in Rovigo, Auditorium R.L. Montalcini in Riccione, Sale Apollinee Fenice in Venice, Argenta Little Rock Arkansas, Carnegie Hall in NY, Sala degli Affreschi in Milan, Alighieri in Ravenna. He has been a special guest in two national TV broadcasts when he was 11 years old. He attend masterclass with M° D. Geringas ,M° L. Harrell, M° E. Dindo, M° M. Roussi. Now  Luca plays an A. Poggi cello dated 1926, owned by Mario Brunello.

Kanghyun Lee

Started playing cello at 11, gave the first recital at 12 with Haydn’s C Major concerto.

Had numerous recitals, chamber concerts and orchestra concerts in Seoul, Busan, Tongyeong, New York, Tokyo, Fukuoka in great Halls such as Carnegie Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Kumho Art Hall, Fukuoka Symphony Hall. Especially performed D.Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1 in Eb Major at Seoul Arts Center concert hall as a "Rising Star" with Korean Symphony Orchestra. He performed at Tongyeong Festival Orchestra under the direction of Michael Sanderling.

 

Works by Cassado, Franck, Rachmaninoff that was played as a duo recital in Kumho Art Hall was rebroadcasted on KBS Classic FM.

 

Selected as a Semi-finalist in the 11th Witold Lutoslawski International Cello Competition, 1st prize in the Joong-Ang Music Competition in South Korea.

 

Participated as a player, student in numerous festivals such as the Tongyeong International Music Festival, the Great Mountains Music Festival.

 

Had Masterclasses with renowned cellists such as David Geringas, Miklos Perenyi, Arto Noras, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Julius Berger, Wen-Sinn Yang, David Finckel.

 

Participated in International Competitions such as Pablo Casals International Cello Competition, Witold Lutoslawski International Cello Competition, Naumburg International Competition, George Enescu International Competition, Prague Spring International Competition Currently studying for master’s degree in the Luebeck Musikhochschule with Troels Svane.

Fred Lindberg

Fred Lindberg (b. 1995) started playing cello as a seven-year-old in Stockholm.  

During his years as a student he has received tutelage from Torleif Thedéen, Jakob Koranyi and Ulrika Edström amongst others. At the moment he is studying the master programme at the Royal College of Music/ Edsberg in Stockholm along with freelancing as a soloist, chamber musician and in orchestras. Fred has received numerous prizes and awards. Most recently he was awarded the Royal College of Music’s Principal Scholarship, and in February 2018 he was one of five young musicians to be chosen to perform as a soloist with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra through the project ”De Unges Konsert”. Previous solo engagements include performances with the Academic Chapel in Uppsala, Royal College of Music’s Symphony Orchestra, Täby Symphony Orchestra and ”Orkestern Filialen”.

 

Apart from regularly giving concerts in Sweden, Fred has toured parts of the world playing at venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, Admiralspalast in Berlin, and Chicago Symphony Center. He has also performed at several festivals, recently he was invited by Swedish pianist Staffan Scheja to perform at the 33rd edition of Gotland Chamber Music Festival.

 

He has attended several international courses and had masterclasses with distinguished cellists such as Steven Isserlis, Gary Hoffman, Frans Helmerson, Anner Bylsma and Jerome Pernoo.

 

Besides playing the cello, Fred is a dedicated singer in the swedish barbershop chorus ”Zero8”. He thrives when he sings in close harmony with fellow choir friends, and being in a choir has been an important aspect of Fred’s musical life. Since the cello is so closely related to the human voice, singing has helped and enriched him in his thoughts around melody and harmony when playing the cello.

 

The cello he is playing is made in Cremona 2011 by Jens Gösta Johansson.

Florian Pons

Florian Pons was born in 1994 and began playing the cello at the age of six.

He studied at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional (CRR) in Toulouse, taking masterclasses with Philippe Muller, then at the CRR in Paris with Raphaël Pidoux. He is currently studying with Marc Coppey at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (CNSMDP). Florian has had the opportunity to work with renowned instructors, such as Frans Helmerson, David Geringas, Gary Hoffman, Boris Andrianov and Seiji Ozawa, and even Nobuko Imai, Peter Bruns and Alexander Rudin. In 2011, he was part of the Orchestre Français des Jeunes and, in 2015, attended the Seiji Ozawa International Academy

 

Yves Henri invited him to play Chopin’s Cello Sonata in G minor at the 2013 Chopin Festival. He has won First Prize at numerous competitions, including Vatelot, Louis Rosoor, Léopold Bellan and Epernay. In 2013, before enrolling at the CNSMDP, he reached the semi-finals at the International Johannes Brahms competition in Pörtschach, Austria. In 2016, he attained the quarter-finals of the Leipzig International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition and, in November of that year, won the Aulnay-sous-Bois Concours International de Violoncelle Tremplin, which would give him the chance to perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto twice backed by an orchestra. In February 2018, he reached the semi-finals at the Witold Lutoslawski International Cello Competition. He would then perform the first movement of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto at the opening concert of the Super Cello Festival in Beijing, China. He just recently reached the semi-finals at both the Enesco and Schoenfeld competitions.

Alejandro Viana

Alejandro Viana was born in Madrid in 1996. He begins his studies of cello at age  of 7 years old.

In 2013 wins the Extraordinary Prize of Degree in Conservatory P. Soler de San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid). He studies with the teacher María de Macedo, and continued his studies under Lluis Claret in Barcelona. Currently he studies in Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía under Ivan Monighetti, and previously with Natalia Shakhoskaya. He has received masterclasses from teachers like Raphaël Pidoux, Christophe Coin, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Wolfang Boetcher, Amit Peled, Wolfgang E. Schmidt, Claudio Bohórquez, Daniel Grosgurin, Stephan Forck, Alexander Rudin, Gary Hoffman, Jens-Peter Maintz, Menahem Presler, Gidon Kremer, Frans Helmerson and Truls Mork.

 

He has participated in IMS Prussia Cove, Rutesheim Festival and Santander Festival, playing with maestros like Zakhar Bron, Ivan Monighetti, Nobuko Imai and Krysztof Penderecki. He has also performed André Previn “Nonet” with Anne-Sophie Mutter. In his school he has been awarded three times with the “Most Outstanding Student” prize.

 

He has received first prizes in several competitions like International Cello Competition in Liezen (Austria), II Concurso Nacional de Violoncello “Jaime Dobato Benavente” de Alcañiz (Teruel), IX International Cello Competition 'Antonio Janigro' and the Special Award “The Zagreb Soloists” celebrated in Poreč (Croatia), Llanes International Cello Competition, OSPA and Spanish Music Award and International “Karl Davidov” Cello Competition in Kuldiga (Latvia). He is also holder of “Juventudes Musicales” scholarship.

 

He has played as soloist with the Chamber Orchestra Andrés Segovia, The Zagreb Soloists, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, IUVENTAS Orchestra, Camerata Viesgo and Freixenet Symphonic Orchestra under Plácido Domingo.

Orchestre du Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse

Orchestral practice is an integral part of the institution’s history: as of 1803, students were playing the symphonies of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven under the direction of François Antoine Habeneck. In 1828 the same conductor founded the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, the predecessor of the Orchestre de Paris.

 

Today, the Orchestre du Conservatoire is made up of an ensemble of 350 instrumentalists who come together in different formations that change according to the season, the repertoire and the guest conductors. This practice plays a central role in the education policy of the Conservatoire de Paris.
