Mr. DOB is the first of a series of characters that Murakami invented in 1993. Considered as his alter ego, it quickly became his signature image and a favourite subject, one he has featured on many supports.

Considered as his alter ego, it quickly became his signature image and a favourite subject, one he has featured on many supports. Immediately recognizable by its large ears and round face, DOB’s shape is a blend of Disney’s Mickey Mouse, a cat-robot called Doraemon from a manga, and Sonic the Hedgehog, a video game hero. The three letters that make up the name DOB are spelt out across his face and ears; they are the contraction of “Dobojité”, a slang word for “why”, taken from a manga.
