Based in Germany, in 2008 Tacita Dean produced a group of photographs of prehistoric stones.
Sensitive to their rural isolation, she views them as remnants of other times, almost invisible in the contemporary era from which they are so removed. Emphasising the contrast between the background – which she covered with the same opaque paint as that used for school blackboards, one of her preferred materials – and the glossy finish of the gelatine print, she directs the viewer towards an experience in which the frontal view of Hünengrab (2008) imposes itself as a monument definitively rooted in a timeless landscape.
