In his vision of video as sculpture, Nam June Paik has paired the TV monitor with different objects: a chair in "TV Chair" (1968), and a statue in "TV Buddha" (1974) and "TV Rodin" (1978), emblems of Eastern and Western thought, respectively.
Inspired by Zen and Eastern philosophies, these works invite the viewer into an endless contemplation within a closed circuit in which the sculptures are confronted indefinitely with their own image, captured on video. In TV Rodin, Paik turns the figure of introspection (originally destined for the Gates of Hell) into a Narcissus, ill at ease when faced with his own identity.
