Late Hours Jean-Michel Basquiat

Friday 5 October 2018

From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Late Hours Jean-Michel Basquiat
Late Hours

On the first Friday of every month, the Fondation Louis Vuitton hosts its “Late Hours”, offering a new perspective on the building, the art and the exhibitions. The evening events dedicated to Basquiat and Schiele will be exciting and fun, celebrating the art and culture of these two major artists.

Jean-Michel Basquiat is the subject of the first Late Hours, which explores the contemporary resonance of his artistic practice and musical tastes.

9.00 p.m.-10.00 p.m.

Jean-Michel Basquiat had one foot in New York, the other in Haiti. Obongjayar has one foot in London, the other in Nigeria. Forming a link between these two artists is music: an eclectic blend of soul, jazz, hip hop and ambient. Obongjayar brings us these sounds, which have parallels with the music Basquiat would listen to while painting. A reserved, intriguing artist, Obongjayar is a poet of the 21st century, merging song and spoken word. Like Basquiat, he manipulates materials and words.

THROUGHOUT THE EVENING / 7.00 p.m.-10.30 p.m.

Taking as a point of departure Basquiat’s fascination with boxers, who he represented on his canvases, from Cassius Clay to Sugar Ray Robinson, Le Club Pugnographique offers a unique experience: get into the ring and “box” with t-shirts and posters! Exploring the codes of boxing, ready-to-wear and ready-to-speak, Le Club Pugnographique has a motto: “the right action makes the right word”.

Starting every 30 minutes from the Short Tours meeting points

A melody combined with a work of art: our guides will lead you on a musical tour of Basquiat’s canvases, analysing and discussing his musical and visual inspirations.

Wear a crown on your head and be a hero for a night!

“Jean-Michel’s crown has three peaks, for his three royal lineages: the poet, the musician, the great boxing champion,” wrote Francesco Clemente, an artist who knew Basquiat.
