4900 Farben consists of 196 panels, each containing 25 coloured compartments whose placement and chromatic choice have been determined randomly by a computer program. 

This singular work can take multiple configurations depending on the combination of the panels. Presented here in its monumental version, the vast kaleidoscope recalls the stained-glass window the artist created for Cologne Cathedral.

Born in 1932, in Dresden (Germany)
Lives and works in Cologne (Germany)

Initially working in the academic tradition taught at Dresden Art Academy (in East Germany at that time), Gerhard Richter took up photography in the early 1960s, continuing on from the "capitalist realism" of his early works, reflecting upon painting and the purpose of art.
