In Alex Katz’s work portraiture is a favoured genre. He mainly paints his entourage and especially his wife, Ada, model for more than 250 paintings.

His timeless portraits, with their pure lines, are characterized by a certain idealized abundance. The doubling of the figure of Ada in this space creates a mingled sensation of tranquillity and instability.

The work of Alex Katz is readily associated with Pop Art, both for its realism and choice of subjects, yet it differs significantly. The apparent simplicity of his pieces reflects a distant Matissian heritage, while simultaneously remaining indissociable from the history of American painting.
