Rina Banerjee

Rina Banerjee was born in Calcutta and emigrated with her family to England at a very young age, before moving on to the United States. Trained as an engineer, she began a career in science before devoting herself fully to art after graduating with a degree in fine art from Yale University (USA).
Shaped by her dual cultural background, her work explores the theme of migration through a reflection on memory, culture, the local and the global. Her sculptures are hybrid compositions, featuring objects as diverse as fish bones, feathers, shells, eggs, ethnographic artefacts, traditional Indian clothing and colonial-style objects. Her drawings, created using a variety of techniques, explore themes such as femininity and reflect her taste for cultural fusion.
