Filmed at night at a former composting site in Karlsaue Park in Kassel, A Way in Untilled is both a record of and an extension to the installation Untilled, presented at documenta. Huyghe transforms a derelict plot of land into a self-sustaining, living ecosystem — plants, bees, rodents, bacteria, sculptures — left to its own devices, indifferent to any human presence.
At the heart of the film wanders a white dog named “Human”, one of whose paws is painted bright pink. Her silent wanderings through this nocturnal biotope structure the film without ever narrating it: she is not the protagonist, but an inhabitant, one being among many in a world that unfolds without a script or intention. The camera adopts her perspective, drawing closer to the Umwelt — the world as perceived by non-human entities.
Huyghe describes Untilled as “a scenario without a scenario”: the elements are simply placed and left to interact, decompose and regenerate. The film captures these invisible and continuous transformations — cycles of life, death and rebirth — without ever seeking to explain or prioritise them. The sound, composed of ambient rustlings and organic resonances, reinforces this immersion in an ‘unknown’ world.
