Sometimes viewed through the lens of the ‘remix’ – the rearrangement of existing elements into a new order – Albert Oehlen’s painting has, since the mid-1990s, made collage a method of composition. The series of paintings produced between 2004 and 2005, to which Rasieren – shaving, a reference to the man depicted in his bathroom, leaning horizontally – belongs, employs this process as a technique. The artist glues images found in magazines onto his canvas. Once incorporated, they are caught up in a maelstrom where forms extend, metamorphose, engulf one another and expand in an almost organic manner. Evoking Abstract Expressionism as well as Pop Art and Surrealism, this approach perfectly aligns with the phrase ‘visual trinket tray’ used by Oehlen to describe his works.

Albert Oehlen graduated from the Academy of Hamburg, where he studied under Sigmar Polke. He explores the pictorial medium through an artistic process in which he unceasingly reinvents the rules for each new series.
He explores the medium—from figurative to abstract—using a variety of tools and innovative techniques to reinvent forms of painting and push their limits, making each painting a unique universe.
