Her recurrent use of panel painting enabled her to control the composition of her paintings in which strident, overlapping colors create tension, while contributing to overall harmony.
Thus the structure of a tree is recognisable in Red Tree (1976): the mass of leaves, the start of the foliage at the top of the trunk. Lines in black, cream, red and tints of red evoke the branches and leaves, while the white canvas is the light passing through them.

This artwork is presented during the "Joan Mitchell, Retrospective" (from 5 October 2022 to 27 February 2023) at the Fondation Louis Vuitton.
