Playing the role of a model who covers up after posing for a centerfold by draping herself in a bathrobe, here the artist seems to be unadorned, herself, with short hair, sullen face, and frontal gaze. Many read these images as the “real Cindy Sherman,” yet this “naked truth” is a complete fabrication. The framing, the importance given to light and shadow, reveal her formal preoccupations, which can also be seen in a second series dating from the same time. In the latter, the artist delivers extremely different versions of herself, one as a tomboy, and two others as very feminine young women, one in a white dress, the other in a lacey slip dress. color studies or color lights, the names given to this series appears to privilege form above subject.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
