In 1983, Cindy Sherman created a series commissioned by Dianne B. to promote her boutique in Interview magazine. This work, using clothing designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier and Comme des Garçons, among others, doesn’t refer to the poses or affects expected from the glamorous universe of fashion. Instead, the photographer accentuates the ambiguity already present in the designers’ work, known for their recognition of clothing as a site for investigating the cultural norms of the body. Thus, she delivers a gallery of absent, aggressive, and extraordinary characters.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
