Here, the artist deepens her exploration of the grotesque, of horror and terror, moving into the realm of trash, gore, and repugnance. In these compositions, inorganic and organic materials are massed together, with their more or less advanced states of putrefaction evident in close-ups, tightly framed on what the eye and the mind translate as mold, decay, vomit and other fluids. Scenes of chaos, desolate landscapes, and bizarre still lifes: Cindy Sherman pushes the exploration of the abject and amorphous to the limit in an intense and disturbing hallucinatory imagery. The figures seem to disappear, emerging in the reflections on glasses, in the background, the shadows, or even off-center.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
