Cindy Sherman’s continuing dialogue with fashion, its designers, and magazines follows an unwavering principle: the artist works with the clothes assigned to her and the resulting images can be used by the client, as well as by her, sometimes in a slightly modified version. These shoots for Comme des Garçons or Harper’s Bazaar prove that the clothing is a defining element in Cindy Sherman’s simultaneous construction of images and identities. Instigators of fantasy and offiction, the costumes and accessories entrusted to her often become unrecognizable, part of an imaginary world governed by the artist’s own laws.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
