Though it had already made occasional appearances as an accessory, here the mask itself becomes the subject of the composition. Glowing, slimy, or covered with an unidentifiable material, they are shown close up, cutting the physiognomy by magnifying effects as grotesque as they are monstrous. Cindy Sherman finds a way to hide, reminding us that often behind the mask, there is no one, and that in Latin “persona” refers to the actor’s mask.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
