Cindy Sherman once again uses dolls in her ‘Broken Dolls’ (1999) series and returns to black and white for a series of smaller photographs depicting dolls in erotic poses. Even more harrowing than those of Hans Bellmer, whose work she was familiar with, they evoke the perversity and cruelty of a child who does not hesitate to cut up and mistreat their dolls, which, from transitional objects, become sex toys.

These accessories, which seem to lead a life of their own, embody “the impulses of those who manipulate them, appropriating a part of their being, and perhaps heralding its imminent disappearance”, writes Régis Durand of them. “When I step back from the photograph,” she says, “it almost becomes a still life.”

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
