In this series, Cindy Sherman again becomes anactress, mimicking the poses of “would-be or has-been actors (in reality secretaries, housewives, or gardeners),” showing empathy for her characters. The headshots tell us about lost illusions, of ageing and the difficulty of finding your place in today’s society, in a manner both severe and tender.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
