Cindy Sherman’s collaborations with Balenciaga and Harper’s Bazaar fueled these works, realized in the 21st century and in keeping with fashion’s new iconographic system, which has shifted to the rhythm of social networks. As an observer of the enthusiasms of the world, she created a series of street style shots, reminiscent of bloggers and influencers. For Sherman the selfie is “so vulgar,” a self-centered act, but her poses and disguises have heralded the trend for uncomplicated stagings of the self. Taking control, she has also begun an Instagram account, combining occasional images from her private life with “selfies” altered with filters and applications available at your fingertips.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
