In the series Line Up (1977), Cindy Sherman photographs herself in the guise of actresses walking past the stage curtain at the end of a play to take their curtain call. From white to black, from reserve to exuberance, the artist explores the transition from a young woman to something more mysterious, particularly through the use of masks. This series brings together the themes – identity, disguise, fiction and fashion – that characterise her later work.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
