Scaled to architectural proportions, Cindy Sherman’s characters, whose eccentricity continues to clash with the limits of the frame, are now limitless. Her oversized figures appear in the exhibition space, transforming the museum into a theater. The graphical black-andwhite backgrounds of these wallpapers amplifies the discrepancy between a fairy-tale setting and people that are fake but also larger than life. Tinselly knights, noble ladies, and acrobats from the fantasy circus are embodied by the artist, her face seemingly unadorned but dazed. Free of makeup, Cindy Sherman’s faces reveal slight problems, elusive deformations produced by retouching software.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
