In this previously unseen series, Cindy Sherman transforms portraits taken on Instagram into woven tapestries. After photographing herself au naturel using her mobile phone, in the style of a selfie, she begins her digital metamorphosis by subverting beauty apps, in defiance of the tyranny of an idealised representation of women.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
