Untitled Film Stills: In these black-and-white photographs, taken by herself or by people close to her, Cindy Sherman imitates the set photographs of 1950s Hollywood cinema.

She portrays micro-situations that the viewer can associate with fictional narratives. The body of work, not without a touch of nostalgia, alludes to the widespread dissemination, through cinema and the press, of female role models who have attained mythical status.

Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954, and living and working in New York, Cindy Sherman has, since the late 1970s, developed a body of work devoted to staging her own persona – work whose success and fame have extended far beyond the realm of art itself. Paradoxically, it is by disappearing behind masks and costumes, make-up and special effects that Sherman has become an icon, challenging the very concept of the portrait.
Cindy Sherman associates the characters in her photographs with roles that she embodies.
