The monochrome sculptural reliefs of the Relief Prints series (2022–) constitute a historical, contemporary, and mythical graphic testimony of Black culture in Los Angeles. Like the cosmological sculptures of ancient Egypt and Mesoamerican civilizations, Halsey’s almost hieroglyphic prints transform the inhabitants, institutions, and everyday moments of South Central into symbols that illuminate alternative constructions of the past, present, and future. She inscribes their expressive cultures and communal ways of life in a dynamic dialogue with Afro-diasporic mythologies, funk music and aesthetics, personal memory, and collective history.

Based in south-central Los Angeles, where her family has lived for generations, Lauren Halsey creates immersive installations that bridge sculpture and architecture. She recontextualises and reinterprets local vernacular sources such as leaflets, murals, signs and graffiti, which serve as symbols of pride, autonomy and resilience. Celebrating and archiving Black cultural expressions, the artist also uses the iconography of ancient Egypt as a means of reclaiming lost heritages. She draws further inspiration from the Afrofuturist aesthetic of funk music and the utopian architecture proposed in the 1960s by Archigram and Superstudio.
