A few years ago, Sasnal began dividing his time between his hometown, Kraków, and Los Angeles. This annual cycle has given him a unique perspective on the sprawling Californian metropolis. Neither a tourist nor a resident of the city, he remains attuned to the slightest changes and differences around him. Always out on the tarmac, cycling – his favourite mode of transport – Sasnal perceives everyday life as if he were seeing it for the first time, through the eyes of an outsider.

Empty cardboard boxes, from a bedding shop, hastily pieced together to serve as a shelter; a Corona delivery lorry beneath the blue Californian sky; a couple embracing amidst the waves of the Pacific; an anonymous suburban street, littered with overturned bins; the artist’s daughter in a swimming pool, her eyes fixed on her phone, whilst an idyllic sunset unfolds over the desert; the ceaseless motorway traffic and the recurring theme of tarmac: all scenes that are easily observed and interpreted. Wilhelm Sasnal

Wilhelm Sasnal trained as an architect but is first and foremost a painter. He works in numerous other mediums including photography, the graphic novel, film and video. His subjects are daily life, historical figures, views of Kraków and important moments in the lives of his friends and family. Sasnal also appropriates images found on the Internet and in the mass media.

Sasnal studied architecture for two years from 1992 at the Tadeusz Kościuszko University of Technology in Kraków. He then turned to fine art and studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. There, until 2000, he exhibited with the artists’ collective known as Ładnie Group - a Polish term for “pretty” – who depicted their contemporary, banal surroundings using a “non-professional” aesthetic that countered the style taught at the academy. Sasnal completed his studies in 1999, then worked briefly for advertising agencies in Kraków while pursuing his personal work.
