In conjunction with the exhibition "The Collection of the Fondation: A Vision for Painting”, the Fondation is hosting a talk in the Auditorium with the American painter Alex Katz and Sébastien Gokalp, curator of the exhibition.

After the talk, a booksigning will be hold in the hall, in collaboration with the Library of the Fondation.

ALEX KATZ

Alex Katz was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927. He is, without a doubt, one of the leading figures of Pop Art. Today, he lives and works in New York and Lincolnville (Maine). In his figurative works, Katz has always positioned himself at the boundary between realism and abstraction. He established himself as a figurative painter at a time when other American painters had turned away from representation. Katz took the opposite direction to painters including Jackson Pollock who were obsessed with the impulsiveness of their own style or with studying barely perceptible differences. Katz’s approach was a calm treatment of a clearly visible, serene world.

Since the 1980s he has been known as one of the most influential painters on the international scene. He has become an icon for a generation of painters who are now in their thirties and forties. Long before other big names in Pop Art such as Andy Warhol, Katz was working in series, a principle adopted by this younger generation.

Katz’s work remains indissociable from the history of American painting, notably Georgia O'Keeffe, Fairfield Porter, Ralston Crawford and Edward Hopper.
