Cao Fei & Zafka Zhang, A Conversation
Conversation

In A Conversation, Cao Fei creates an audio and visual dialogue with artist and composer Zafka Zhang (Zhang Anding) exploring the "new sound", the noise generated by China's rampant urbanisation.

the artists

Cao Fei

A graduate of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (2001), Cao Fei began to make her name on the international scene in the early 2000s. Her work was exhibited at Tate Modern in London in 2013, at MoMA in New York in 2014, and at the Venice Biennale in 2015. Drawing inspiration from popular and traditional culture, everything from cinema to opera by way of advertising, manga and new technology, her videos and multimedia installations explore the relationships between real and virtual worlds, and between private and public spheres.

Zafka Zhang

The co-founder of China Youthology, a research centre dedicated to youth culture in China, and a regular collaborator of Cao Fei, Zafka Zhang is a sound artist whose installations and performances, often based on sociological and ethnographic field studies, investigate urban spaces and social networks in China.
