The American Daniel Linehan, one of the most outstanding figures currently working in contemporary dance, has made Europe his home port. Dividing his time between Antwerp and Lille, he enthusiastically incorporates both voice and words into dance. In keeping with his rebellious style, he has decided to take on Igor Stravinsky’s masterpiece The Rite of Spring, following in the footsteps of Nijinsky, Martha Graham, Maurice Béjart and Pina Bausch. But in his own unique way. “I don’t see the point in the story of The Rite as it’s traditionally understood, that of a community demanding that one of its members be sacrificed. When I listen to the music, it’s not a tale of sacrifice that I hear. I don’t hear death. I hear energy, what you could also call vitality".
For this Rite of Spring, the choreographer Daniel Linehan, partnering with the dramatist and musician Alain Franco, has brought together 13 graduates from the P.A.R.T.S. dance school for a masterly version for two pianos arranged by Stravinsky himself.
The bi-frontal staging configuration, magnified by the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s auditorium, allows the viewing public to be completely absorbed by the collective energy of the music and dance. Daniel Linehan, in his own way, is inventing a Rite before The Rite.

Daniel Linehan
Daniel Linehan worked as a dancer and choreographer in New York before moving to Brussels in 2008, where he completed the Research Cycle at P.A.R.T.S As a performer, Linehan has worked with Miguel Gutierrez, Big Art Group and many others. In 2007-2008, he was made a Movement Research Artist in Residence.
Daniel Linehan's own choreographic work seeks to blur the line that separates dance from everything else. He approaches performance-making from the point of a view of a curious amateur, testing various interactions between dance and non-dance forms, searching for unlikely conjunctions, juxtapositions, and parallels between texts, movements, images, songs, videos and rhythms.

In New York he worked with a team of four other dancers to create performances based on text and dance. He has also worked with Michael Helland on several duet projects. In 2007, he premiered the solo Not About Everything, which has since been presented in over 50 theatres around the world.
His most recent projects are Montage for Three (duet, 2009), Being Together Without any Voice (quartet, 2010), Zombie Aporia (trio, 2011), Gaze is a Gap is a Ghost (trio, 2012) andThe Karaoke Dialogues (septet, 2014). He is also working on more specific projects, such as the book A no can make space (2013) and Vita Activa, a workshop based on the functions of time and work.
From 2012 to 2014, Daniel Linehan was Artiste Associé at deSingel Internationale Kunstencampus (Antwerp, BE) and New Wave Associate at Sadler’s Wells (London, UK). Since 2013 he has been Artist-in-Residence at the Lille Opera (FR).
Since early 2015, Daniel Linehan has been developing his projects within his own organisation, Hiatus. Hiatus receives state support from the Flemish government.
