“West Side/East Side” Weekend: two exhibitions with a single ticket
The Fondation and the Philharmonie de Paris have developed an unprecedented collaboration centred on the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, dovetailing their complementary programming.
From Friday, 30 June, to Sunday, 2 July, the two institutions are joining forces to present a major event: “West Side/East Side”.
For these three days, when you purchase a ticket for either of the two exhibitions, you enjoy free admission to the other.
For West Side, at the Fondation, two journalists from French culture magazine Inrocks will play a DJ set to create a fitting musical ambiance in the lobby (Hall d’Accueil):
- François Moreau, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, 30 June
- Patrick Thevenin, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, 1 July
For East Side, at the Philharmonie, the reality-based film Downtown 81 will be screened in its entirety over the weekend. In 1980, stylist and photographer Maripo, conscious of the lush musical fertility of the Downtown scene, came up with an idea for a film that would capture the creative spirit of the New York underground scene before it vanished.
Admission information:
On Friday, 30 June, Saturday, 1 July, and Sunday, 2 July, persons holding a ticket to visit to the Fondation are invited to go to the “West Side/East Side” counter in the Fondation lobby to obtain a voucher* for admission to the Philharmonie de Paris exhibition between 30 June and 2 July. NOTE: Voucher holders must make a reservation to visit the Philharmonie exhibition.
A few words about the "Basquiat Soundtracks" exhibition:
From 6 April through 30 July 2023, the Musée de la Musique of the Philharmonie de Paris is holding the first exhibition devoted to Jean-Michel Basquiat’s powerful relationship with music: "Basquiat Soundtracks". In a spectacle of both sight and sound, the show serves as a richly diverse and heroic soundtrack to a dazzling oeuvre that is ripe for interpretation through music – from Beethoven to Madonna, zydeco to John Cage, Louis Armstrong to the Universal Zulu Nation.
Curators : Vincent Bessières, Dieter Buchhart, Mary-Dailey Desmarais. Exhibition co-produced with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
