Comme un vaisseau dans les arbres ; ouvert sur la nature, le bâtiment imaginé par Frank Gehry, exprime l’esprit de la Fondation Louis Vuitton pour la Création, perpétuellement en devenir. Il est conçu pour se réinventer en permanence, au gré des expositions et des manifestations. En osmose avec l’environnement, il joue la respiration entre espaces intérieurs et extérieurs.

Cet édifice, comme un voilier aux voiles de verre gonflées par le vent, représente une prouesse technologique et architecturale. Mariant transparence et résistance, courbes et force, cette œuvre audacieuse « constitue la déclaration d’intention artistique de la Fondation Louis Vuitton » résume Bernard Arnault, président du groupe LVMH.

La Fondation Louis Vuitton pour la Création crée, avec le soutien de la Ville de Paris, un pôle artistique, sensible et visible, ouvert sur le monde, ajoutant à Paris un geste architectural majeur. Implanté à l’orée Nord du bois de Boulogne, le bâtiment de Frank Gehry surgit comme par magie de l’environnement naturel et urbain, jouant harmonieusement de ses correspondances avec le bois, le jardin, la rivière, le ciel et la ville. L’architecte renoue ainsi avec l’esprit des jardins botaniques de la fin du XIXe siècle, offrant un nouvel espace exceptionnel de découvertes, d'émotions et d’échanges culturels en multipliant les ponts entre patrimoine, jeunesse, création, innovation. « On sentait que le Bois n’était pas qu’un bois, qu’il répondait à une destination étrangère à la vie de ses arbres, l’exaltation que j’éprouvais n’était pas causée que par l’admiration de l’automne, mais par un désir » écrivait Marcel Proust. Lecteur passionné de l’écrivain français, Frank Gehry raconte : « lors de ma première visite, j’ai immédiatement pensé à Marcel Proust, et j’ai été ému aux larmes. Je l’ai imaginé ici, avec ses amis. »

Like a floating ship in the trees; wide opened to nature, the building imagined by Frank Gehry expresses the spirit of the Fondation Louis Vuitton pour la Création, ever in state of becoming. It was conceived to be continuously reinvented with the passage of exhibitions and events. In exquisite harmony with the environment, its interior and exterior spaces breathe as one.

The structure, like a sailboat with glass sails swelling in the wind, is a technological and architectural feat. Transparency bonds with sturdiness curves and unite with strength; “this remarkable project will constitute the Fondation’s first artistic statement,” says Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of LVMH.

With support of the City of Paris, the Fondation Louis Vuitton pour la Création is establishing an artistic center that is at once sensitive and visible, one open to the world, adding a major architectural undertaking to the French capital. On the northern edge of the Bois de Boulogne, Frank Gehry’s building rises like magic from the natural and urban environment, harmoniously echoing the woods, the garden, the river, the sky, the city. The architect revives the spirit of the botanical gardens of the late 19th century, providing a new area for discovery, emotion and cultural exchange by building further bridges between heritage, youth, design and innovation.

"I could feel that the Bois was not really a wood, that it existed for a purpose alien to the life of its trees; my sense of exaltation was due not only to admiration of the autumn tints but to a bodily desire" wrote Marcel Proust. Frank Gehry, a passionate reader of the French author’s work, tells this story: “When I saw the Jardin d’Acclimatation, it immediately brought to mind the writings of Marcel Proust, and I wanted to cry with happiness.”
