In 2006, during a conference in New Orleans, Paul Chan found himself literally thrust into the middle of a scene from Waiting for Godot. The city’s devastated landscape compelled him to restage Beckett’s play on the city’s streets. Launched in 2007, this series of performances – along with the challenge of staging a work of fiction within a city in turmoil – has now been compiled in the form of an archive. Rather than speaking of success, Chan prefers to refer to the "essential strangeness" of this project, praising the discrepancies between his response to a crisis situation and the artistic form that emerged from it.
