In Spiegel (Mirror), Keren Cytter reflects her heroine’s mental instability through the subversion of conventional cinematic narrative techniques. The subject of the short film – the introspection of a woman grappling with her age and her desires – is explored through a plot steeped in everyday life yet eerily strange. The starkness of the actors and the setting – an empty flat save for a mirror and a few pieces of furniture on the floor – contrasts sharply with the film’s emotional richness. The rapid pace of the dialogue and editing creates a sense of activity verging on hysteria, particularly as the film, being short and structured as a loop, seems to renew itself with every viewing.

Consequently, it is difficult for the viewer to determine what has already been said or seen. It is equally difficult to distinguish, within the scenes, what belongs to the realm of the tangible and what relates to the main character’s fantasies. Filmed with a handheld camera and using live sound, the film nonetheless maintains an extremely detached relationship with its characters. The soundtrack is provided by one of the actors, and the form of the ancient chorus is evoked through two characters who harass the main protagonist.

Keren Cytter

Drawing primarily on video, Keren Cytter’s work stands out for the uniqueness of her artistic style. To date, the artist has also published three short stories (The Man Who Climbed Up the Stairs of Life and Found Out They Were Cinema Seats, The Seven Most Exciting Hours of Mr Trier’s Life in Twenty-Four Chapters* and *The Amazing True Story of Moshe Klinberg). Through its plots, dialogue, the ambivalent role given to the narrators and the blurred boundaries between fiction and autobiography, her work could be described as "auto-fiction". By involving her family and friends and using domestic settings, the artist further emphasises the personal nature of her films.
