At just 16 years of age, Sophia Shuya Liu burst onto the Parisian music scene, a glittering array of international music awards already to her name.
This concert is sold out and will be broadcast live and in replay on FLV Play and offline on Radio Classique.
As a student of Dang Thai Son in Montreal, the Chinese-Canadian pianist honed her nascent gifts, which opened the doors to the greatest North American concert halls. Her alert, powerful and colourful style is particularly exquisite in a Romantic repertoire, by far her preference. It is therefore no surprise that this recital is built around works by Liszt and Chopin, giving pride of place to brilliant operatic variations (Variations on Don Giovanni by Chopin, Réminiscences de Norma by Liszt) and poetic and contemplative works (Petrarch Sonnet 123 by Liszt, Nocturne, Op. 37, No. 2 by Chopin).

Sophia Shuya Liu
Sophia Shuya Liu, born in Shanghai on 10 October 2008, moved to Japan with her parents when she was two years old, and currently lives in Montreal, Canada. She has been studying piano with Professor Dang Thai Son since the age of nine. The child prodigy took up the piano at the age of four and, a year later, she took part in her first competition. Numerous awards followed, the first prizes of the Kobe Art Center Piano Competition (Japan), the Hangzhou Competition (China), the 18th Ettlingen International Piano Competition (Germany), the Hartford International Chopin Competition and the Philadelphia International Chopin Competition (both in the United States).
In 2023, she won the Thomas & Evon Cooper Competition for young soloists (in the United States), which earned her the opportunity to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra and David Robertson, then Second Prize in the first Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli International Piano Competition in Brescia, Italy, with several Special Prizes, including the Audience Prize. Ms Liu has since performed on prestigious stages in North and South America, Asia and Europe; in recital or with orchestra (with the Bazzini Consort Orchestra in Brescia, the Orchestre Symphonique de l’Isle in Montreal, the Tolima Music Festival Orchestra, and others).
Her first CD was just released, featuring some memorable excerpts from her performances at the Michelangeli Competition. Highlights of the 2024/2025 season will include her debut at the Chopin Festivals in Warsaw and Duszniki, the Boston Summer Piano Festival, the Festival de la Roque d’Anthéron International Festival – both solo and with orchestra as part of an evening of Mozart, alongside his teacher Dang Thai Son. She will also make her Paris debut at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, as well as La Folle Journée de Nantes, in Geneva, the Piano à Saint-Ursanne Festival, and will perform on tour in Asia.
