Unclassifiable and long misunderstood, Sturtevant established, in the 1960s, a critical relationship to the art system and the notion of author.

With her replicas of works by other artists – Warhol, Johns, Duchamp, Beuys, Gonzales-Torres – produced using the same technique as the “original”, and his more recent videos made from collages of images, Sturtevant is constantly questioning originality and the signature, notions that are now omnipresent in art.
