"Red Curve in Relief" (2009) is formed of two connected monochrome panels. The red panel sits on top of half of the white panel, and is cut off at an angle.

The reference to the classic concept of “relief” – as with Green Relief and Concorde Relief, two other works by Kelly in the collection – is key. The shadow created by the upper panel on the white panel below gives the work its intensity and also a particular softness.
